We recently caught up with Alfred to learn more about his experience in regional Queensland and how he’s adapting to his new life.
In April 2023, Acumentis proudly welcomed Alfred Zaki, our first successful Subclass 482 (Temporary Skill Shortage) visa nomination. Alfred joined us after being inspired by our Australian Working Holiday campaign, which sought qualified international property valuers to relocate to Australia. With an impressive career spanning over 11 years in real estate, Alfred brings a wealth of experience and expertise to our Rockhampton team.
Hailing from Uganda, Alfred holds MRICS qualifications and has an extensive background as a land valuer with the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA). His active involvement in industry associations, combined with his inquisitive nature and enthusiastic attitude, made him a great fit for the Acumentis team.
As a seasoned property valuer, Alfred has experience across all sectors—including commercial, industrial, residential, and institutional properties, as well as hotel and lease valuations. He joined Acumentis as an Assistant Valuer, and we’re thrilled to share that he has now earned his CPV status.
Alfred and his partner Viola have embraced life in Australia, and we’re excited to be sponsoring him for Permanent Residency.
We recently caught up with Alfred to learn more about his experience in regional Queensland and how he’s adapting to his new life.
What is the highlight of your time in Regional Queensland so far?
With the welcoming and friendly Acumentis team and the warm community in Rockhampton, I have found it easy to settle in the region. The beaches and amenities are just minutes away, which is great. I’ve also gotten to the point where I can navigate Rockhampton without needing Google Maps!
What do you miss most about home?
I miss my mum. We stay in touch and chat regularly, which helps. The family back home is happy, and they send their best wishes to Viola and I as we settle into life in Australia.
What's the biggest difference between being a Valuer in Uganda compared to Australia?
The biggest difference is the availability of data and the paperless work environment in Australia. At Acumentis, the technology used for valuation data collection, report processing, and delivery is efficient. It’s been a useful tool, and I’ve really come to appreciate it.
How do you spend your weekends?
I spend more than half of my weekends catching up on current affairs, either reading or watching the news. Viola and I also do our grocery shopping for the week on weekends. Sometimes we mix it up by going to social events, visiting recreational spots, or heading out to the Capricorn Coast beaches for some fun.
Would you recommend others make the move if the opportunity presented itself?
Absolutely! I believe in jumping at opportunities, especially the challenging ones. If it feels difficult or out of reach, I’m even more motivated to give it a go. Perseverance has been key to some of my biggest accomplishments, and I think making the move has been part of my personal growth as well.
What's the strangest Australian food you've eaten?
I tried lobster for the first time here in Australia! Seafood isn’t as common in Uganda except for fish, so that was a new experience for me.
What have you found most challenging?
Swimming – I love being near the water, but I don’t go too deep! I’m still getting used to it, but I’m enjoying taking it one step at a time.
Is your wife Viola enjoying her time in Australia?
Yes, she’s having a great time! Viola loves nature, and she’s really enjoying Australia’s beautiful landscapes and wildlife.
Alfred’s journey is a great example of embracing new challenges and thriving in a different environment. We’re excited to see what the future holds for him and are grateful to have him as part of the Acumentis family!
